I am *loving* this book--the story of the 1854 cholera outbreak that ravaged a neighborhood in Soho, London as scientists scrambled to identify the disease's cause...Was it water-borne? Emanating from the miasma? How could illness strike the residents of one building so virulently while seeming to skip right over their direct neighbors? And how many would perish before the answer was found? Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in #medicalhistory, #publichealth, #epidemiology, #geography, and/or #19thcenturyhistory (oh hey--some of my favorite things!) #cholera #epidemic #infectiousdisease #pathology #johnsnow #theOTHERjohnsnow #germtheory #historyofmedicine #histmed #victorianmedicine #broadstreetpump #19thcenturylondon #victorianlondon #scientificdiscovery #maps #bookstagram #nonfiction #theghostmap #pathology #cholera #19thcenturyhistory #germtheory #theghostmap #geography #histmed #nonfiction #publichealth #victorianlondon #epidemic #medicalhistory #infectiousdisease #victorianmedicine #bookstagram #maps #epidemiology #johnsnow #19thcenturylondon #historyofmedicine #scientificdiscovery #theotherjohnsnow #broadstreetpump

“Il medico ha una missione sacra sulla terra, è per adempierla che è risalito sino alle fonti della vita ed è disceso nelle misteriose tenebre della morte. Quando il crimine è stato commesso e Dio, spaventato, distoglie i suoi occhi dal criminale, spetta al medico dire: «Eccolo!»” (Il Conte di Montecristo) _______________________________________________________ #arte #medicina #tbt #study #medicalexaminer #culture #medicine #engraving #science #artandscience #artandmedicine #medicalhistory #histmed #medicinalegale #lovemyjob #collegiummedicum #collegiumcriminale #saturday #work #job #TagsForLikes #myjob #ilovemyjob #photooftheday #life #instajob #mortuivivosdocent #instalife #instagood #instadaily #work #science #myjob #job #life #arte #instagood #culture #histmed #collegiummedicum #tagsforlikes #photooftheday #medicalhistory #ilovemyjob #instajob #mortuivivosdocent #engraving #medicina #tbt #medicine #collegiumcriminale #artandmedicine #saturday #study #artandscience #medicinalegale #instalife #lovemyjob #instadaily #medicalexaminer

What sort of art do you appreciate? . From comics to cave-paintings, humans have been producing art for ages. Archaeologists recently reported on an abstract drawing from 73,000 years ago. . Today, some people find it more difficult to pursue studies or jobs in the arts than others. And in 2017, the number of people choosing to study creative arts and design dropped by 17,000 from the previous year. . @artsemergency aim to support students who could most benefit from but are least able to pay for education. This 19th century Polish postcard is entitled, ‘Chopin and his Ghosts’. Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), arguably one of the greatest composers of all time, regularly reported ghostly sightings. He even claimed at one point to have seen a variety of spirit entities crawling out of his piano. . However, Dr Manuel Varquez Caruncho has recently suggested that Chopin may have, in fact, suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy. This form of epilepsy can cause seizures and intense, convincing hallucinations in its sufferers. . Scientists Michael Persinger and Sandra Tiller were once running an ECG scan on a patient when the subject reported seeing an entity in the room with them. When the scan results were examined, the scientists noted a significant spike in the activity of the subject's left temporal lobe at the time she reported the presence appearing. . For anyone interested, the image on this postcard is taken from a painting by Tadeusz Korpal, c.1910. . #chopin #epilepsy #hallucinations #fredericchopin #greatcomposer #hauntedpiano #historyofghosts #ghosts #brainactivity #oldpostcard #histmed #oldpostcard #hallucinations #chopin #hauntedpiano #ghosts #epilepsy #histmed #fredericchopin #brainactivity #greatcomposer #historyofghosts
The detail is incredible! . Wax model, 19th century. The side of this wax human face has been cut away to reveal the internal structure. If you look closely, you can even see eyelashes and eyebrows on the face. Wax models like this were used for teaching anatomy to medical students at a time when few bodies were available for dissection. They very much represent the merging of science and art which characterized the Enlightenment. The model was donated to the Science Museum in London by the Department of Human Anatomy at the University of Oxford. . #Repost @drlindseyfitzharris . #dissections #waxmoulage #waxmodel #humananatomy #medschoollife #edutainment #medicalhistorian #sciart #histmed #historyofmedicine #medstudent #anatomy #physiology #history #faceoff #learningtool #repost #waxmodel #waxmoulage #momentummuscletherapy #functionalmovement #histmed #anatomy #medschoollife #artistry #medstudent #medicalhistorian #movement #history #face #surgery #dissections #muscles #eyeball #facepeel #medicine #biomechanics #historyofmedicine #physiology #humananatomy #sciart #edutainment #medical
ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE . . 🔴MENTAL PATIENT - 20th c🔴 . . . . @remains2beseen . . This incredible image is "mental patient - 20th c" in the Argentina section of a book called 'The Dead' by Canadian photographer Jack Burman. The book, a series of photos of the deceased remains from concentration camps, medical laboratories and private collections amongst others, was published in 1999 by The Magenta Foundation. The 52 images are described as a "meditative documentation of a variety of human remains" and the details of the pics elevate the book into a complex work of art and philosophy. (This specimen will simply have been dissected like this and preserved as a a wet specimen/potted specimen - what we call a 'pot' - because there will have been some interest in whether or not the anatomy of the brain of a 'mental patient' is different from someone 'normal'). #enfermagem #dissecação #odontologia #anatomia #darkhistory #psychiatrie #dissection #dissecção #histmed #anatomy #psychologist #odonto #medicalhistory #medicina #psychedelic #history #odontology #medicine #psicologia #psiquiatria #psycho #anatomie #historyofmedicine #fisioterapia #humananatomy #physio #physiotherapy
You want tourniquets? We’ve got tourniquets! Lancets? How many do you need?? . We’re in the process of a big project to survey and re-house our large collection of medical and dental #artifacts. Our student assistant, John, has been hard at work making sense of legacy collection guides and missing info, and putting together the puzzle of how to store so many artifacts of unusual shapes and sizes. Thanks to this project, our artifacts will be better housed and much, much easier to find! . #histmed #medicalartifacts #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #histmed #artifacts #medicalartifacts #specialcollections
@Regrann from @yalemedhistlib - This flower-like image of a dissected eye comes from the pages of Johann Gottfried Zinn’s Deio anatomica oculi humani iconibus illustrate (1755). Zinn was a German anatomist considered one of the first to conduct a detailed anatomy of the human eye. Zinn also published important works on botany—the plant genus “Zinnia” is named in his honor. This illustration was requested to be reproduced for an upcoming Yale University Press publication. #eye #johannzinn #ophthalmology #anatomy #anatomicalillustration #science #historyofmedicine #historyofscience #medhist #histmed #librariesofinstagram #rarebooks #rarebooks #science #eye #johannzinn #ophthalmology #anatomicalillustration #librariesofinstagram #historyofmedicine #anatomy #historyofscience #histmed #medhist
This X-ray machine was commissioned and used by Dr. José Carlos Ferreira Pires (1854-1912) in Brazil and is rumored to be the first ever used in South America . It was made by Siemens in 1897, just two years after the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Roentgen, under the supervision of Roentgen himself in Germany. The machine was then sent to Brazil by boat and transported by ground to Formiga . Resting on the X-ray machine is the Siemens’ Bucky apparatus. The Bucky apparatus (or diaphragm) was a means of eliminating secondary radiation without affecting the primary X-ray beam. The patient would rest on top of the curved wood diaphragm while the film was loaded inside the back of the machine. The X-rays would penetrate through both the patient’s chest and diaphragm, onto the film. The X-ray images developed had greatly improved contrast and sharpness, which enabled doctors to give better diagnosis. Used for many years, the machine allowed pioneering radiologists to perform diagnosis in South America. It fell out of use after the death of Dr. Ferreira Pires in 1912 . . . . . #imsschicago #chicago #museum #xray #histmed #medicalhistory #southamerica #brazil #history #physician #radiology #diagnosis #history #brazil #chicago #physician #southamerica #diagnosis #histmed #xray #radiology #medicalhistory #imsschicago #museum
