George Inness, Early Morning, Tarpon Springs, 1892.
.

In the course of his lengthy career, George Inness increasingly eschewed precision of detail in his paintings, conveying mood and emotion through richness of tone and broadness of handling.
In 1878 he wrote in Harper’s magazine:

George Inness, Early Morning, Tarpon Springs, 1892. . . In the course of his lengthy career, George Inness increasingly eschewed precision of detail in his paintings, conveying mood and emotion through richness of tone and broadness of handling. In 1878 he wrote in Harper’s magazine: "Details in the pictures must be elaborated only enough fully to reproduce the impression that the artist wishes to reproduce. When [there are more details], the impression is weakened or lost, and we see simply an array of external things which may be cleverly painted and may look very real, but which do not make an artistic painting. . . . The one is poetic truth, the other is scientific truth; the former is aesthetic, the latter is analytic." Inness first visited Florida about 1890, and he subsequently established a house and studio in Tarpon Springs, where he executed the painting, here. In a pink-and-blue morning light, a lone man studies a cluster of buildings in the middle distance. Through blurred outlines and delicate, subtle tonalities, as well as the solitary presence of the figure, Inness masterfully evoked the brightening day and peaceful mood of this moment. Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848 – 1884): Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), 1879, oil on canvas, 254 × 279,4 cm, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
.
.
When after the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, Joan of Arc's homeland of Lorraine was once again held captive by invaders, the people of Lorraine rallied around the symbol of Joan of Arc who four hundred years earlier had rallied the French army against the English invaders. As one of the Lorraine natives inspired by the sudden relevance of Joan of Arc's image, Jules Bastien-Lepage in 1875 started sketches for this life-sized portrait of Joan of Arc showing her at the moment that she received her first call to arms against the English invaders of 1424. Bastien-Lepage captures the suddenness of the call by showing the overturned chair from which she has just sprung at her spinning wheel behind her together with the wet edge of her dress that has just brushed through the dew from the weeds in the garden at the back of her parents' house.
The almost transparent Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine can be seen hovering in the background against the house awaiting her decision. (Metropolitan Museum of Art) @metmuseum

Edward Hopper, Haskell's House, 1924, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, @ngadc
.
.
.
From Hopper’s Places (1998, Univ. of California Press), by Gail Levin: “When Hopper painted Gloucester Mansion, the side view of a large, ornate Second Empire house set on a hill overlooking Gloucester harbor, and a year later painted this same imposing house in a frontal view as Haskell’s House, he was working in a location not far from where he painted his 1912 oil Gloucester Harbor, but his interests had led him to something much more personal than the picturesque harbor captured by so many artists before him. He now focused on this ornate hybrid style of architecture which Jo called ‘the wedding cake house,’ a fitting subject for a work painted on their honeymoon.
Although painted in a completely different color scheme, the structure of the house today is just as Hopper depicted it. Yet the overall appearance is so changed that one does not initially recognize it. Unlike the house of The Mansard Roof, still set in a quiet corner of Rocky Neck, this once stately house is on one of busy Gloucester’s main thoroughfares, overlooking the now industrialized harbor. The short shrubs that once lined the long steps leading up the hill to the house have been replaced by tall fir trees which totally block the view that Hopper painted.”

Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889): Le Paradis Perdu (The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Paradise), 1867, Oil on canvas, 94 x 121,9 cm (3 1.01 x 3 11.99), Musée d'Orsay, Paris
. .
.
By the 1860s Alexandre Cabanel had firmly established himself as an archetypal academic painter and principal pompier artist of his time. Alongside William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Cabanel was one of the most highly esteemed artists of Napoleon III and one who had also enjoyed commissions from King II of Bavaria and the Tsar of Russia.
Theme of his 'Le Paradis Perdu' is based on Bible - Genesis chapter 3; At first, Adam and Eve lived with God in the Garden of Eden, but the serpent tempted them to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which God had forbidden. After doing so, they became ashamed of their nakedness and God expelled them from the Garden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and becoming immortal.

Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848 – 1884): Le Père Jacques (The Wood Gatherer), 1881, Oil on canvas, 196,8 × 181,6 cm (77 1/2 × 71 1/2 in.) Milwaukee Art Museum, USA
.
.
.
The Woodgatherer, painted for the Salon of 1882, is one of Jules Bastien-Lepage's most important works. The old woodsman, a family friend, and his granddaughter represent the heavy weariness of old age and the innocence of youth, as well as the passage of time. The remarkable colour and handling of paint reflect the artist's unique ability to blend the greater luminosity and atmosphere of the Impressionists with the more conservative, precisionist technique of the Academicians. By the early 1880s, Bastien-Lepage had become the leader of the Naturalist school, and many of his contemporaries believed that he would one day succeed Manet as the leader of modern painting. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863 - 1923): Las Tres Velas (The Three Sails) (detail), 1903, Oil on canvas, 96.5 x 138 cm (38 x 54 ½ in.), Private collection
.
.
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida painted Las Tres Velas (Three Sails) on the beach of El Cabañal during the summer of 1903. One of the most luminously eloquent of his many images of the fisherwomen of his native Valencia, 'Las Tres Velas' marks Sorolla's artistic passage to a new level of creativity. Sorolla was already one of the world's most honored painters when he launched his 1903 campaign of open-air painting among the fishing communities on Spain's Mediterranean coast, but in the course of that summer Sorolla pushed his art to a new monumentality and laid claim to a broad new palette of colour effects. Lost from public view for a century, 'Las Tres Velas' consolidates a decade of Sorolla's painting experience into an unforgettable image of the womenfolk of his beloved homeland.
The asymmetry of Sorolla's eye-catching composition immediately announces the distinctive ambition of Las Tres Velas: three barefoot women of different ages, pulling together as they walk against the wind, are juxtaposed with a sweeping, open line of billowing sails on low-slung fishing skiffs that lumber into shore.
Wind snaps their patterned scarves and twists their aprons against their legs; the damp breeze glosses the rude wicker with prismatic color; and the early morning sunlight glances off a feature or a texture with little regard for form or beauty, yet each of the women has her own age, her own identity. Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890): The Night Café in the Place Lamartine in Arles, September 1888, Oil on canvas, 71 x 90 cm, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, USA

Vincent van Gogh painted The Night Café (original French title: Le Café de nuit) in Arles in September 1888
The painting was executed on industrial primed canvas of size 30 (French standard). It depicts the interior of the cafe, with a half-curtained doorway in the center background leading, presumably, to more private quarters. Five customers sit at tables along the walls to the left and right, and a waiter in a light coat, to one side of a billiard table near the center of the room, stands facing the viewer.
