WHAT NOT TO SAY TO A PERSON SUFFERING FROM BINGE EATING!
Binge Eating Disorder is one of the most common eating disorders in the United States. Yet most people with a Binge Eating Disorder will suffer in silence because it is incredibly misunderstood by the wider population.
You may be living with someone with this disorder and I want to talk about how we can become more aware of it and how we can help someone who is navigating through this problem in their life.
I remember the first time I realised I might have a problem with bingeing. I was confused and as us ladies do I went to my girlfriends for some wisdom. It was often met with the following statement: “Girl, you train hard and it’s not like you’re overweight - treat yo self”
It was that moment I received validation for the behaviour that was about to take me down a path of severe psychological distress for the next 9 months.
Let me ask you this, if your friend was going through a hard time in her life and you noticed that she was drinking excessively rather than confronting her struggles - would you encourage her or be worried for her?
The issue that we seem to have is that people who don’t suffer from binge eating or binge eating disorder don’t understand the detrimental effects it can have on people’s lives. I mean it’s food - what’s wrong with indulging in food?
Well the long term affects of a Binge eating disorder may result in many of the same health risks commonly associated with obesity. These include: ✨ diabetes
✨high blood pressure
People with binge eating disorder can also suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or other issues that can greatly affect quality of life.
So ask yourself this:
Is your friend emotionally disconnected from her food choices? Is she in control?Does she feel satisfied after indulging in food or does she feel ashamed and overwhelmed that she just mindlessly ate three days worth of food in an hour window?
If it’s the later - you probably shouldn’t encourage her to to “treat herself”. Instead, talk to her - listen to her and encourage her to work through the issue that is causing her to turn to food for comfort ♥️ ...
