#classicfilmsunday ‘Across the Pacific’ (1942) dir. John Huston with Vincent Sherman. I forgot to upload my weekend photo, gasp! My head was on headache fire this Sunday morning so subtitles were out and instead I landed upon this Humphrey Bogart spy movie. It was directed by John Huston but before filming ended he was called up for military service and so shooting was finished by Vincent Sherman. When Sherman asked how the character gets out of the sticky situation at the end, Huston famously replied “Bogie will know what to do.” Of course he will. Cos he’s Bogie and he can do anything including give this propaganda film murky and intriguing life. In the film Bogie’s a disgraced US soldier journeying on a rather suspicious Japanese boat down to the Panama Canal (it’s conspicuously set the day before Pearl Harbour). He gets on the good side of a suspiciously treasonous business man and starts a romance with a woman with suspiciously little reason to be on board. SUSPICION! Except alas not really. The film is genuinely ambiguous as to whose side Bogie is on but then it plays that card way too early. The rest is enjoyable but what was the best part of the tension was gone for me. There is also a literal plot point that revolves around a Japanese man suffering a bit of identity replacement - one man got off the boat, another got back on in his place - but umm, it’s totally legit that no one would notice cos they all look alike right? Nope. Casual 1940s racism aside this film did come out in 1942 so the US was at war and I suppose this was a solid morale boosting film at the time. The best bits are the scenes between Bogie and Mary Astor. Their chemistry and witty repartee is charming and delightful and I could have watched just that for 90 minutes. Instead the spy thriller is good but - awesome knife throwing scene inside the cinema aside - lacking in thrills and tension at the very end for me. Wish Huston had got to finish it.
