Leuven is Belgium's most famous university town. The Catholic University in Leuven has been a centre of learning for nearly six centuries. Today, it is Belgium's highest-ranked university as well as one of the oldest and most renowned research universities in Europe. The great humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam and Justus Lipsius both taught there, the geographer Gerhard Mercator while one of the university's chancellors became Pope Adrian VI in 1459.
