Who are you? What do you do? How would you describe yourself? We ask others, and ourselves these questions on a daily basis, and we are used to receiving a 1 to 3 sentence response in return. We answer with our name, our study or job, and some adjectives like “funny”, “ambitious”, or “kind”. Just like that, you would be able to categorise and stereotype yourself, so that others could make sense of you. But defining my personal identity has always been a huge insecurity of mine. I never felt like I could answer these seemingly simple questions. I did not feel like I could fit in a box society gave me. However, that did not seem to matter; I still got labelled anyway. I liked make-up and fashion, so people gave me the label dumb. I was studying a lot in law school, so I was boring. I enjoyed taking pictures of myself, so I must be shallow. Being stereotyped fuelled my motivation to research them, more specifically harmful gender stereotypes and the power of linguistics and identity. I focused my research on the national legislation of both the Netherlands as well as the United States, and how they implemented legal measures in order to ensure the eradication of gender stereotypes. From a philosophical perspective, I started researching the linguistics, dialectics & hermeneutics as a mean to influence or even form our identity. I spend my time studying Hegel & Ricoeur, analysing how symbols (language) and the ‘self’ related and could engage with each other.
I’m grateful for my insecurities, because they made me discover my favorite topics. I could never fit in any box people placed me in, and it made me feel constricted. I still have the same issue with social media sometimes - not that I am fake or dishonest in any of my content, but I do find it hard to fully show my somewhat paradoxical interests. If you ever felt like you did not fit in any box, I hope that you know that in most cases, people just don’t know how f*ing difficult the identity question they are asking is, and answering ‘I don’t know who I am, I am still figuring that out’ seems an appropriate response. Don’t feel pressured to limit yourself - your complexity is beautiful ❤️ ...
