On their wa back to Los Angels from San Diego, Frank Miller and Chris Claremont were stuck in 2 hour traffic jam.
After Miller mentioned his disinterest in Wolverine. The two began a discussion about a shared passion. Japanese Samurai movies and Manga.
By the time the pair made it back to LA, the talk had morphed into an idea for a 4 issue Wolverine series. And so one of the most visually stunning and iconic comic books had been made a reality.
At the time there had been a fairly large stable of idle X-Men characters. Miller and Claremont were not the only creators interested in profiting from the pool of characters. Tom Defalco had noticed tha the Multiple Spider-Man titles had sustained strong sales. He pitched Jim Shooter an idea about a West Coast X-Men team.
Claremont put the kybosh on Defalcos idea. "I didn't want anyone ese poaching." Said Claremont. "We basically said 'screw that. We'll do our own X-Men title." With the idea of taking the X-Men back to basics.
Now with the idea of the new Wolverine series and designs on the X-Men. This was the beginnings of Claremonts 16 year long affair with the X-Men.
