#throwbackthursday to that time this armored cricket went semi-viral. Cosmoderus femoralis. Though they are called crickets, this species is actually a katydid. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both vegetation and meat. Disclaimer: the cricket that it is feeding on was pre-killed..

Rare something-hoppers (1/3)
27. Family Cixiidae – Cixiid Planthopper
Some insects are exceedingly scarce, requiring investigation in the remotest ecosystems on Earth. Cixiid planthoppers are not rare per se, but few people will ever observe a member of the strange cixiid tribe Bennarellini, recognised from just five Amazonian and one Costa Rican species. I documented the above individual in 2009 and subsequently identified, compared, and deposited it with Bennarellini specimens at @uofginsectcollection . Very likely it is Noabennarella paveli, described by Holzinger et al. (2013) based on material also collected at Yasuni!

Fed his first dubia, and he actually did get it (it looks like, anyways)! Happy spider, such a good boy. He is definitely one of my favorites, though, I will say, I do wish we’d gotten a female because they’re just SUCH good spiders that I know the 4ish years we may get with this guy won’t be enough.❤️ #curlyhairspider #Brachypelmaalbopilosum.
