Tight Neck Giving You A Headache?💫 . The SCM is a major culprit in neck pain. Folks generally end up stretching through all things posterior (upper traps, levator scap, etc etc) when their neck is “tight” but forget about the things in front….which are… probably… pulling you forward. 🌀Head keeps getting pulled forward, posterior muscles reactively tighten to hold it on and round and round you go. . So, stretching exclusively through the posterior groups may be compounding your issue. Tricky, tricky. . The SCM or sternocleidomastoid runs from your sternum (breastbone) or clavicle (collarbone) up your neck and connects just behind your ear to the mastoid process. . It one of your largest neck muscles and is responsible for opposite side rotation and lateral flexion. . Beyond potentially shortening and pulling your head forward and down whilst screwing up rotation and side bending - lots o’ trigger points like to live in this guy and can contribute to 👉🏻behind the eye👉🏻in front of the forehead👉🏻behind the ear pain. . Couple ways to work this dude: . 🎥First; locate. You can do this by rotating your head and then pushing in your hand. It’s that big guy that pops on the side. From here you can📍grip the muscle with flat fingers (no pinchiness)📍gently apply pressure and hold 📍or grip and slowly laterally bend away . 🎥Option 2: 📍drag tissue slack onto your sternum or clavicle 📍rotate your head away📍extend backwards on an angle . ✳️Self-Muscle Release for Your Suboccipitals . 📽@drkev_hybrid demos one of my go to self-treatments for suboccipital muscle pain in this video. As we went over the other day, these muscles get hyperactive with hyper-extension ⤴️ of the upper neck. This often happens because of forward head posture and other postural adaptations. - 🔥Upper Cervical Stretch🔥 . 🤕 Today's stretch/mobilization may be indicated for those of you who suffer from a stiff neck that is either not painful or minimally painful at rest, but is painful and/or limited as you turn your neck in one direction. It can also be used for those of you with headaches as long as you progress slowly, as being too aggressive with this may temporarily make your symptoms worse. Just be smart with it . 🙌 The intent of the stretch is to improve the mobility of the upper cervical spine and/or the flexibility of the suboccipital muscles on the side you are limited to. You should feel the stretch at the base of the skull and neck on the side you are stretching towards . 📌 The more painful it is to stretch, the softer you should stretch it, and the less time you should hold it in one position . 😉 If you can, try to work on the hold-relax strategy I mention in the video, where you isometrically resist motion in the opposite direction and then follow with actively turning your head in the same direction with assistance from your hands. This usually allows for the greatest gains in mobility . 💥 As with any mobility exercise, it's important to actively move through the new range of motion for high repetitions, and I would suggest rotating to your max rotation with a tucked chin and holding isometrically against the resistance of your hand in order for your body to learn how to maintain this new range . 🚨 If pain is your biggest issue and not a mobility restriction, perform in the same way but STOP when you feel resistance, NOT a painful stretch. As I mentioned earlier, this can make the problem worse if you are too aggressive because providing too much tension to an already "over-tense" muscle may cause it to become more sensitive and painful . ❤️ TAG or SHARE with a friend with a stiff neck or headaches! There’s an optimal relationship between the length of your muscles the force which it can generate. When a muscle is too short (ie tight), too much of it overlaps to engage it enough of it to produce a strong contraction. When the muscle is too long (ie overstretched), not enough is in contact with each other to generate a strong contraction. Like much else in the human body, there’s an important balance to try and maintain in order to perform at our best. . In an age of constant sitting and not enough moving, it’s quite typical that a lot of our muscles become tight and shortened. Add a workout routine that aims to strengthen muscles by shortening them (traditional concentric exercises) but that lacks enough stretching + myofascial release, and it’s no secret why many of our major muscles groups become tight, shortened and dysfunctional. . Because of the intertwined nature of our body, when one muscle is tight and shortened, others try to compensate and ultimately suffer from the consequences. Poor posture, unbalanced muscle groups, sore joints, sore soft tissues and more injuries are inevitable, and to be honest, an unwelcomed pain in the butt! 😓 no pun intended! . To maintain optimal muscle lengths, add a routine of self massage and stretching to the end of your workouts. 10-15mins is all that’s needed! Begin with foam rolling or self trigger point releases. Stretch all major muscles groups ~ 30-45sec hold has been studied as the optimal length of stretching. Take long even breaths and use the exhale to release further tension and slip deeper into the stretch. Tension Headaches💫 . Tension headaches are generally that dull throb that slowly progresses as your day continues and has you rub-a-dubbing over your temples💆🏻 and the back of your head. . Main muscle culprits are: 🔻suboccipital mm group 🔻upper traps 🔻semi spinalis capitius 🔻sternocleidomastoid (SCM) . I'm going through the three main muscle issues I see on the reg. --And really, who doesn't like giving themselves a bunch of chins and then putting it on the internet? 💁🏻 . 📽Suboccipitals - 📍place peanut (2 LAX balls joined) at the base of the skull 📍key with this is to retract the chin, not just drop it to your chest 📍find tension and let your head sink into it 📍reset, repeat . 📽Upper Trap- 📍pin the ball between you and the wall 📍shrug up and downward 📍work through the entire upper trap region 📍repeat . 📽Levator Scap - find a corner📍pin ball against wall 📍reach same side arm down toward ground or tuck behind 📍motion nose to armpit 📍repeat . 🔥Take it easy so you don't flare things up. Two points- ☝🏻Not all headaches are created equal and not all headaches are tension headaches.
