What is the universe really made of? How do we know?...
.
Over the last sixty years, scientists around the world have worked together to explore the fundamental constituents of matter, and the forces that govern their behaviour. The result, so far, is the ‘Standard Model’ of elementary particles: a theoretical map of the basic building blocks of the universe.
.
A Map of the Invisible is an explorer’s guide to the Standard Model and the extraordinary realms of particle physics. After shrinking us down to the size of a sub-atomic particle, pioneering physicist Jon Butterworth takes us on board his research vessel for a journey in search of atoms and quarks, electrons and neutrinos, and the forces that shape the universe.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins is back by popular demand in our Spring Collection.

Since its first publication in 1976, The Selfish Gene has been translated into 25 languages, and is considered one of the most important scientific works of the late 20th century. Dawkins’s story takes in a vast array of creatures from polar bears to black-headed gulls and vampire bats, and behaviour from cannibalism and deception to aggression and mating.

Updated to include Dawkins’s own 40th anniversary epilogue, this Folio edition is the first to add illustrations to the illustrious work: 51 incredible photographs from nature and laboratory that add weight to the text and further explain the ground-breaking concepts.

The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci are a new set in our Spring Collection.

Almost 500 years since his death, the genius of Leonardo da Vinci has never been rivalled. This commemorative edition of the 1938 Edward MacCurdy compilation includes writing on almost every subject imaginable: anatomy, medicine, engineering, optics, architecture, hydraulics, botany and natural history.

Almost 100 of his exquisite drawings have been reproduced to exceptionally high quality: preparatory drawings for The Last Supper, anatomical diagrams such as The Vitruvian Man, and sketches of inventions – including his designs for a flying machine, created hundreds of years before others dared dream of flying.

This three-volume set is quarter-bound in leather, and features gilded tops and ribbon markers.

"Why did you get married?" . "it's not me, it's my selfish genes" 😁 . In this book, Richard Dawkins present an interesting aspect of natural selection : we do not control our genes, they are controlling us, we are just a mortal machine that carries an imorrtal gene. It makes your mom loving you because you need her as a machine to be able to survive, your grandparents loves you even more because that it your mom did her job and you are the one you must carry on. We usually love the healthy person who can help us reproduce... You get the idea 😁. . . Now what about the species who are collaborating, like ants, is their alturism behavior contradicts the selfish attitude? Not if we consider the ants society us one big gene machine who bring them together so the gene survive. . . I loved the part using the game theory to explain some alturism/selfish behaviors that we see in humains, the prisonnier dilemma as a good example. . . . The book is well written, of course the theory of evolution knew some changes since 1975 when the book was written, the book doesn't treat the whole theory but just this particularly gene point of view of it, and I think it's really interesting to read. . . . . . #bookstagram #goodreads #theselfishgene #richarddawkins #evolution #bookphotography #bookrecomendation #bookreview #moroccanreaders #bookish #bookworm #bookstagrammer #read #reading #instaread #igread #booklover #iread #booknerd #ouafaebookreview #book #bookworm #sciencebooks #marriage #motherhood #genes ...

Hey guys! Just want to share this interesting book. Did you know science has proven that lucid dreaming is possible?
-----
I actually have no plans to try to be awake or be conscious in my dreams 😂 I just find it amazing that this is a real thing. Plus, I got to learn more about the brain, sleeping, and dreams.
-----
And did you know that it's important to have a dream journal? Ideas from dreams or your dream itself can be helpful to your reality. It says on this book, the periodic table of elements came to chemist Dmitri Mendeleev during a dream. Interesting, right? 🤓
-----
Here's a question: who do you agree more with:
🔶️Plato = dreams are expressions of repressed desires
🔷️Aristotle = dreams have no purpose.

Spent a little time tidying up today after school. My desk is a HOT MESS but the rest of the room looks fresh and organized which gets me pumped to do some work. This is the last week before break and I have all the feels!

❤️ I really liked “Halley Harper, Science Girl Extraordinaire: Summer Set in Motion” by Tracy Borgmeyer @shelovescience.⁣
⁣
☄️Halley is a 9-year-old girl, named after Halley’s Comet. She loves ballet and poetry, though her favorite thing is science. ⁣She does a lot of science experiments at home, but, unfortunately, they often end up pretty messy.⁣
⁣
🚰This doesn’t please Halley’s mom, and when the last experiment with Oobleck leads to a total disaster in the kitchen, Halley is on the verge of being banned from doing science at home. ⁣
⁣
🎈Luckily her mom agrees to send her to a summer science camp with her best friend Gracelyn. At first, the science camp doesn’t seem welcoming, but soon Halley and Gracelyn start having fun and even make friends with a boy camper. And when strange accidents start to happen, Halley has to use her courage and scientific skills to try to prevent the camp from being closed forever.⁣
⁣
The book seamlessly integrates explanations of Newton’s Laws of Motion, Non-Newtonian fluids, Newton’s Cradle, as well as quotes by famous scientists. ⁣
⁣
This engaging story with great characters, messy science experiments and fun adventures will be a perfect fit for STEM-loving kids.⁣
⁣
This is a longer book (around 30-35k words) and is best suited for 9-12-year-old kids who are confident readers.⁣ ... My full review is available on my blog (link in profile). ... Have you read this book? Share your thoughts! ☺.

Whenever I encounter anything about quantum teleportation, I'm always reminded of the metaphysical implications, it's just so fascinating to think about. The theory goes that when you go through a teleporting device, an identical version of you with the same exact properties or 'quantum state' is reassembled in another location, destroying the original version of you in the process. A question is then posited: Would you still be you? What makes you, you? It is essentially the 'Ship of Theseus' for the philosophy buffs, but

It is essentially the 'Ship of Theseus' for the philosophy buffs, but "Physics of the Impossible" doesn't really linger around these type of questions. By contrast, Michio Kaku mostly sketches the whimsical entanglements of science in this book, as he bends over backward to investigate just how far can we stretch the limits of physical possibility: from traveling faster than the speed of light to humans teleporting to astronomical distances. Y'know, all the amazing sci-fi in the movies we watch and the books we read. Kaku begins the book by categorizing the so-called impossibilities into three categories: - 🔖Class I - force fields, phasers, death stars, teleportation, telepathy, antimatter engines, robots, and starships. While unattainable today, they may be possible within the century or the next. 🔖Class II - faster than light speeds, time travel, entry into parallel universes. Nothing in these two categories violates the known laws of physics but we understand the concept, could happen millions of years into the future. 🔖Class III - perpetual motion machines and precognition. They violate our current understanding of physics and would require some sort of paradigmatic shift. He also creates classes of civilizations (basically the Kardavesh Scale) to give us perspective on how far we've come as a civilization: - 🔖Type I civilization is one that is able to harness the power of the earth. 🔖Type II can harness the power of the sun. 🔖Type III can utilize the power of the galaxy as a resource and so on. He thinks we sit at about type 0 civilization and are only on the cusp of breaking through a type 1 civilization. *FOMO feelings go here* (CONTINUE...) ...
